DIY vs. Readymade: Which Option is Best for Decorating Your Home
There are two types of people in this world: those who DIY, and those who don’t. But maybe you’re considering changing things up. Perhaps you’ve always been one to tackle challenges instead of taking the easy way out and buying items, but you don’t have the time or energy anymore.
Or the opposite might be true – perhaps you’ve always preferred shopping, instead of spending hours making something when it’s so much more convenient to just buy it, and now you want to try your hand at DIY. Either way, as with most things, both options have pros and cons. Keep reading to learn more about them and then make an informed decision.
DIY pros
You’ll get a sense of accomplishment. Sure, you might get frustrated and pour your blood, sweat and tears into the project, but you’ll feel such a sense of pride once you’ve finished it. It’s amazing to see a bunch of separate things come together to form one really cool thing, especially if you know you’re the one who did it. You’ll also be learning a new skill. Make peace with the fact that your first few projects will likely not be perfect, but don’t give up. Practice makes perfect, as they say, so the more DIY projects you complete, the more you’ll hone your skills. Imagine being able to impress your friends by showing them a coffee table made out of an old barrel.
DIY cons
Doing any type of project will require a lot of your time. As in, a lot. You’ll need to research, gather your materials, do the project, and wait for it to be ready for usage. That’s a lot more time than simply going to the store and buying something. You also stand a chance of failing. Which is totally okay, don’t get me wrong, but it can be quite disheartening to put money, effort, and your heart and soul into a project, only to have it fail. To avoid this, you can always start out with easier projects and buy the rest, like planters, from a place like PureModern.
Readymade pros
Let’s face it: it’s much more convenient than going the DIY route. You can simply pop into a store to grab what you need. In some cases, you don’t even need to do that – you can order online and receive your products without ever leaving your home. Especially when it comes to really complicated designs, like these tables, it will definitely be easier to buy instead of make. You can always return the items if you end up not liking them or if they break, something which isn’t possible at all with DIY projects.
Readymade cons
It’s often much more expensive to buy readymade products than to make them. This is because you’ll be paying for the finished product, as well as the time it took to make it. In some cases, you’ll be paying for a designer name as well. DIY tends to be the more affordable option. Another risk with readymade items is that your house might end up looking exactly like everyone else’s. We all want our homes to be unique, but that can be hard when everyone shops at the same places. With DIY, you’re always guaranteed to have a one-of-a-kind project, while the same can’t be said for store-bought products.
I think a hybrid route is good. Though, I love to do things DIY because it comes with a sense of accomplishment. But DIY doesn’t always mean savings and definitely not a time saver. It’s good question thought.
