Last Updated: February 3, 2024Categories: General tipsTags: , 2.7 min read

Do you own an apartment building and are frustrated by the cost of energy? If you really want to maximize profit on your apartment building, while attracting the best possible tenants, then you should install solar panels. Although it’s a less common phenomenon than home solar panels, solar for apartments is no less beneficial. Apartment buildings undoubtedly consume a lot of energy, but you can actually eliminate energy costs with the right solar panel system.

Solar for Apartments

In this post, we’re going to discuss how apartment buildings can go solar. Read on and you’ll see how solar power can guide you to a brighter future as a property owner.

Understanding the Costs

When you’re deciding whether or not to install solar panels on your apartment building, there are a few important numbers to look at. The first is your monthly energy bills. These are going to dictate how big of a solar panel system you’re going to need. It’s no secret that utilities are a huge expense for an apartment building owner. Sometimes, the cost of individual units is transferred over to your tenants, but even still, you’re paying for the energy used in hallways and common areas. The next thing you need to look at is the cost of solar installation. To cover the large amount of energy used in an apartment building, you’re going to need more panels than the average household. The total up-front price tag is going to look like a lot, but there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to solar installation.

Understanding the Perks

You have to consider the fact that you’re going to make a significant amount of the installation cost back through tax credits, rebates, and incentives. The federal ITC, for instance, offers a 26% tax credit for residences or businesses that install solar between January 2006 and December 2023 (when it goes down to 22% – the program is finished in 2024). In addition, some states offer their own solar tax credits that work in a similar fashion to the ITC. Don’t forget to look into local credits and incentives, as well as things like SRECs that can even make you money in the long run.

Once you have your apartment building solar panels up and running, you’ll see the unending benefits through your energy bills. When you don’t have to pay for energy, you can transfer the savings and convenience onto your tenants. This is no doubt an attractive option for tenants, especially those that are eco-conscious, who will happily pay a premium to live in an eco-friendly building.

Apartment Building Solar Panels Are the Future

Solar energy has really taken off with single-family homes in the US. In the near future, we’re sure to see more solar for apartments as the cost of solar decreases and demand for solar for renters increases. Get ahead of the curve and install your solar panels ASAP. This will most likely not have as quick of a return on investment, but it is still progress. It is tough to power a four story building with comparable roof space as a standard family home, but maybe this could entice a specific niche of apartment dweller, and perhaps a small extra cost could be built into the monthly rent. Thank you for the unique perspective on solar panel installation.

As a handyman company I LOVE this article and the forward looking guidance in it. Most people think only about homes or businesses getting solar, but apartment buildings are businesses and if the tenant has the right income or financing, this could be a great asset to have long term. Definitely not going to have as quick as a return on investment, but it could be a great feature to entice more green thinking tenants, which is a growing population right now and will only continue to grow.
