Reasons Why Reptiles Make Great Pets
Nowadays, cats and dogs are known to be the perfect pets to bring home, especially if you have kids, but the choice is not limited to only these two. If you’re thinking of getting a new pet and you’re not a fan of the common choices, you could consider getting a reptile. There’s a variety of options when it comes to reptiles and they make great pets for you and your kids. You can choose the one that suits your family most to ensure that you’ll be able to take good care of it.
If you’re still in doubt, here are some reasons why reptiles make great pets.
Teach Responsibility
Just because reptiles require little attention, it doesn’t mean that they will not teach your kids how to handle responsibilities. If your kids are younger than 5 years old, they may not be able to take good care of a cat or take dogs on a daily walk. On the other hand, with reptiles, they can add water and feed them from a very young age.
Easy Care
The best thing about reptiles is that they require little care. They’re totally fine by themselves and most of them don’t make any noise. You will only need to feed them once or twice a week as they’re growing, and once every 10 or 14 days as an adult. Snakes, and especially ball pythons, are the most popular reptiles as they are one of the smartest, are not very active, and will be kept in a 20 to 30-gallon tank. They need to be fed once every two weeks and can live up to 20 years. When looking for a pet that requires little care, the ball python is your go-to option.
No Training
For a dog to behave, you will need to go through a very long training process. However, snakes and lizards need no training whatsoever to be a good pet. You will not need to hire a professional trainer for your reptile pet or spend hours trying to teach them not to bark at strangers. You will just keep them inside their aquarium and enjoy their company.
No Fur
If you ask any cat or dog owner what’s the most annoying thing about their pets, they will surely tell you it’s the fur. Cats and dogs shed all the time, which leaves you with fur all over your house and you’ll always need to brush off fur from all of your clothes. Although reptiles shed their skins, it will most likely happen in their own tank and all that you need to do is remove it when they’re done.
Less Space
If you live in a small apartment, owning a reptile will not be a problem. They don’t need a lot of space. Even if you can’t get a 20-gallon tank for a snake, you can get a bearded dragon or a white’s tree frog and keep it in a small aquarium, and they’ll be totally fine.
Low Maintenance
Snakes, lizards, and all reptiles require little attention, which means that you don’t need to spend hours playing with them. Do you know how do snakes sleep or when is their feeding time? You will not need to come home early to take care of them. You just need to ensure that they are fed on time, have water and warm lights. You also don’t need to go through the weekly grooming process that dog owners go through. However, you will need to ensure that the tank they are in is habitable and clean, and the temperature is not too high or too low. Before you go out, you should always make sure that the tank is sealed to avoid any accidents inside the house. If you are getting a snake, it’s better to keep the tank sealed all the time and ensure that your kids will not be able to open it.
Reptiles that are kept as pets usually don’t live more than a year. They often die because they have to move to another home or because of mistreatment. People get reptiles as pets because they are easier to handle than other pets, but some owners don’t know that they need to provide the right atmosphere for this unique pet. Reptiles are easier to keep as pets, but they will still require food, water, and maintenance. It is better to know each reptile’s requirement before you get one and know a little about all the different species so that you can choose the right one. Once you’ve settled on a certain reptile, it is time to prepare your family for this commitment. Getting a reptile is just the same as getting any other pet. You and your kids should know how to treat it and take care of it. Treat it right, and it can live for decades.
