There’s nothing better than a good night’s sleep. Sleep has unique restorative powers; it is a time for our bodies to unwind, our muscles to rest and our minds to relax. To get enough quality sleep to help our bodies to recover, it is vital to create the perfect sleeping environment. This includes the right lighting in the room, the right temperature, the right pre-sleep schedule, and of course, the right bed. Creating the perfect bed depends on your body as well as your sleeping position. Some people need one pillow for their heads and one to snuggle with. Other people like to sprawl out so they need a lot of space. Whatever your sleeping preference, there is one element of the bed that is more important than anything else; the mattress.

Body Impressions On A Mattress

A good mattress can be hard or soft, depending on what you prefer. It should be comfortable, support your back and neck, and should be durable enough to last a long time. One common problem that many people encounter with their mattress is the formation of a body impression. This is like a you-shaped hole in your mattress where you usually sleep. Over time sleeping in the body impression is very uncomfortable because there is no longer any support. To avoid this, you can change your sleeping position, such as sleeping on your stomach. And for such positions there are special mattresses – see the types of mattresses for stomach sleepers. But not everyone will want to change their position because they are used to sleeping in the same position. But how can you solve this commonly occurring problem?

In this article, we will explain some simple solutions on how to fix body impressions on a mattress.

1. Buy a New Mattress

The first solution to a body impression is to simply buy a new mattress so that you don’t have the problem any longer. Whilst this suggestion may seem like a bit of a cop-out, that depends on what mattress you decide to buy next. It is often older, poorly made mattresses that develop body impressions. These days, you can buy a specially designed mattress which resists sagging, as this will not develop body impressions and so can provide you with years and years of comfortable nights. Body impressions are usually caused by the deterioration of different layers of the mattresses. Specially designed modern mattresses reinforce these layers which prevent them from breaking down so your mattress retains its original shape and firmness.

2. Flip Your Mattress Over

If you don’t want to buy a new mattress, the most simple tried and tested method of dealing with a body impression is to simply flip the mattress over. Whilst this may not technically “fix” the problem, it is a pretty effective solution as the other side of the mattress won’t have the indent. There are some mattresses that only have one side for sleeping on, and so for those mattresses, this solution will not work. For most mattresses, however, you can sleep on one side for three to six months, and then as the mattress starts to sag in the middle, simply flip it over and sleep on the other side for the next three to six months.

Not only does this solution provide you with a flat, comfortable surface to sleep on, it will also help the other side of the mattress to recover a little. Think of it as pressing a flower between the pages of a book. Eventually, both sides of the mattress will pretty much flatten out, and whilst this is not a long-term solution, it works well for in the short-term.

3. Buy a Mattress Topper

Another simple solution to the problem of a body impression is to buy a thick mattress topper which will go over the indent and so will cushion you nicely. Quality mattress toppers are inexpensive and there are so many different types, made from a range of materials and with different thicknesses and levels of firmness that you will easily be able to find the perfect mattress topper for you. As with flipping the mattress over, this is not a long-term solution, and if your body indentation is serious then at some point you will need to replace the mattress, but for a quick fix whilst you save the money for a new mattress or wait to move houses, using a mattress topper is a great little tip.

Getting a good night’s sleep is so important and anything that affects our ability to do so can be very frustrating and detrimental to our health and well being. Making sure that you have the perfect mattress is the first step towards setting up the ideal bed. A body impression on a mattress can be a big problem that needs solving if you are going to be able to sleep well.
