In your bag
If you leave for work every morning with some sort of bag or briefcase, whatever shape or form it might take, it should provide a perfect storing place for your spare key. While you might move your master key from location to location, taking it out of your pocket and leaving it on the side while you’re at home, your spare key can be kept in your bag and never removed. That way, if you do find yourself locked out of home after work, you’ve got a handy backup.

In your back garden
Hiding your key under your doormat or a strategically placed rock isn’t exactly recommended nowadays- it’s a trick far too many people are aware of, including burglars. Your back garden, though, should provide more options when it comes to stashing away your spare key. The more creative you can be, the better. Birdhouses, bricks, tree trunks and bins all make ideal storage places. Just don’t forget where you hide it!

With a neighbour
There’s nothing more convenient, when realising you’re locked out of home, than remembering that your next-door neighbour is looking after your spare copy. Obviously, don’t give your key to your neighbours if you don’t trust them and know them well, but if you’re on a friendly basis with them, then absolutely go for it. You can easily drop by to pick up your key- and maybe stop for a chat, too- and it’s a lot safer than leaving it somewhere outside.

In your car
Like your work bag, if you’re most likely to get into your car as soon as you leave your house, it’s a good place to store your spare key. Tuck it away in your glovebox or under your seat, and you need only think about it in emergency situations. Just make sure you don’t have your house key and your car keys connected on the same ring- that only leads to a grand-scale nightmare if you accidentally lock yourself out.
What if you don’t have a spare key?
If you don’t have a spare key, it’s wise to contact a locksmith or a Key Machine Supplier to have one made as soon as possible. It doesn’t cost much at all to have your key duplicated, and will save you so much stress in the future, should you misplace your master key. Many people choose to give a spare key to a trusted friend or family member, so you might consider getting two duplicates- one for storing in your possession, and one to give away.
