DIY Herbal Dewormers for Dogs

An often big problem for dog owners is their dog getting worms. The problem with using some products that remove worms is that they sometimes contain toxins and carcinogens. The thing a lot of people don’t realize is that worms can sometimes can be removed naturally.

DIY Herbal Dewormers for Dogs

Luckily there are herbal remedies which can be used to not only help remove the worms but other herbal solutions can be used to also help prevent your dog from getting them again.

Your Dog’s Immune System

The most important thing to do is to keep your dog’s immune system as strong as possible. This is done by a host of things. To name a few of these options:

  • Consider a natural diet that is tailored specifically for your dog age and breed. The more natural ingredients with the less artificial ingredients the better.
  • When trying to remove the likes of fleas for example instead of using pesticide options instead opt for herbal solutions.
  • Don’t over vaccinate your dog. Point here being that giving your dog vaccines that aren’t needed shouldn’t be necessary. Only consider vaccines that you deem to be important and that you feel are not a risk to your dog.
  • Try to avoid the use of certain things like shampoos with chemicals or using pesticides on the lawn where your dog plays. Basically we are trying to limit contact with toxins or unnatural ingredients as much as possible.

When Your Dog is Deworming

When your dog is under a deworming process a great thing to give your dog is parsley water. The reason I suggest to give your dog parsley water is because it is high in many different nutrients. Also because it is a diuretic(increased passing of urine) means that your dogs systems are always flowing well and any badness or toxins are being passed out often and regularly. Basically how you make parsley water is you get about 1 liter of water and then add a bunch of parsley to it then you bring the water to a boil for a few minutes then after you let the water cool and remove the parsley. Then depending on the size of your dog give him/her some of the water once a day for up to 10 days. For a smaller dog 3-4 tablespoons or for a larger dog 7-8 tablespoons per day. Apart from the parsley water you have some other natural ingredients which help with preventing worms on your dogs. Below I have listed a few of the best options and their benefits.

Turmeric

Turmeric is arguably one of the best choices for killing parasites in the body thanks to having multiple anti-parasitic properties. Also because turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties this can aid this dogs intestines which may be inflamed because of the worms. Also its worth mentioning it’s suitable for dogs and puppies alike. When you first give your dog turmeric start with a small amount like half a teaspoon and mix it into your dog’s food, you can increase it too a larger amount over time if your dog doesn’t have any issues with it. Also ideally you want to add a little black pepper to it as it improves absorption of the important elements of the turmeric.

Garlic

Garlic is effective at preventing and treating intestinal worms. Garlic has been shown to be effective at preventing and also treating the parasite Giardia. To include garlic in your dog’s diet simply chop 1 clove of garlic and let it sit for 10-15 minutes and then add to their food and allow them to eat. Waiting for 10-15 minutes allows the allinn and the alliinase enough time to undergo enzymatic reaction that creates allicin which is the important ingredient. The allicin has been shown to reduce inflammation and have antioxidant benefits.

Pumpkin Seeds or Oil

As a preventative measure you can give your dog pumpkin seeds or pumpkin oil. The reason you would want to do this is because of a few things. They offer anti-microbial support, antioxidant support, anti-carcinogen and also deworming properties. It’s also worth mentioning that they are nutrient rich and contain a nice selection of vitamins including zinc, vitamin A and are also high in protein. As far as the dosage goes I would recommend ¼ teaspoon for every 10 lbs or your dog, so roughly for smaller dogs about 2 teaspoons or for larger dogs 4 teaspoons. All you need to do is to add the seeds to their food.

Conclusion

In conclusion a lot of dogs can be treated for worms naturally and some of these measures can also be used as a great preventative measures as well. So of course these alternatives are a great choice for both situations. Of course if you don’t see an improvement after a little time of these herbal treatments there are other options out there that would be worth trying. If you are looking for more natural dog dewormer alternatives I recommend you check out this article for that.
