No time is a good time for your HVAC system to go out. But if you’re in a place that’s getting some extreme weather at the moment, be it hot temperatures or cold temperatures, having to deal with heating or cooling issues can not only be uncomfortable, but could even become deadly. Knowing this, it’s wise to have a few tricks up your sleeve to try if and when your HVAC system suddenly stops working normally.

To help you know what you can do, here are three things to try when your HVAC system stops working as it should but before you call in a professional to fix your HVAC unit

Start With Your Thermostat

As soon as you notice that your HVAC isn’t working as it should, whether that means it won’t turn on or it’s turning on but nothing is happening, the first place that you should look is your thermostat.

In some cases, if your thermostat runs out of battery, it can cause your system to stop working. If this is what’s going on, simply replacing the battery should get things going again. While you might need to turn your system off and then back on again, it’s always a good idea to check on the batteries first before trying a more extensive fix, just in case this is what does the trick.

Check The Power

If you’re having issues with the power coming to your home, it’s likely that your HVAC system is going to have issues, too. This can happen both if you lose power to your entire house or if the breaker for your HVAC system was tripped.

If the breaker to your system tripped, you may need to flip the breaker to the unit or the breaker to the entire house to get things back up and running. But if that doesn’t work, there might be other issues with the electrical that you’ll need professional help to figure out and fix.

Take A Look At Your Air Filters

The air filters for your HVAC can also cause your system to stop working as it should. Because of this, it’s vital that you regularly replace your air filters so that your system remains functional and operates at peak efficiency.

If you know you haven’t replaced your air filter in a while, try turning off your system and replacing the air filter. Give the system a bit to rest and then turn the system back on after the filter has been replaced correctly. Oftentimes, this can get your system working again if the filter was the issue.

If the HVAC system in your home stops working like it normally does, consider trying some of the options mentioned above to help you troubleshoot the problem.
