How to Start Your DIY Project at Home Today
More people have taken on DIY projects now that they are mostly stuck at home during the quarantine. If you are one of those individuals and you’d like to get started on a DIY project, here are some tips to help you get started.
Plan ahead
Think of a DIY project you want to do. Does the roof need repainting? Do you want to change the upholstery in the living room sofa? Maybe the metal decors need some polishing. Whatever it is, you want to have a plan for how you’re going to tackle the project so you can gather the materials needed and set a schedule for when you’re going to do it.
Create a drawing
It can help to create a visual of your plan. Say, you just ordered a new couch and you want reorient everything in the living room to make it fit. Before you choose a comfortable couch for your rooms, create a drawing of your desired layout first. It may take multiple drafts before you get to one that you like. But getting it right during this stage ensures you don’t have to make several changes during the actual project.
Get a permit
Before you begin a project, find out if you need to obtain a permit to do it. Some home improvement projects such as building a fence, roofing, adding electrical outlets, and replacing windows actually require that you do. Look up your local laws and see if you need to get one otherwise, you’ll end up getting started on a project that you can’t finish.
Wear protective gear
Make sure you are safe while working on a project by wearing protective gear. For example, if you’re going to be dealing with paint, wear a mask so you don’t inhale the toxic fumes. If you’re going to handle a sharp tool, wear cut resistant gloves to avoid injury. Assess your working situation and make sure you are protected against potential hazards.
Have DIY zone
DIY projects can get messy but you can prevent it from creeping into other rooms by having a dedicated DIY zone. This is where you will do the project for the whole duration as well keep the tools needed for it. It’s efficient to do it this way because once you’re done, you also only need to clean up one area after the project.
Schedule a cleanup
At the end of every day, you want to do a quick clean up so you can easily pick up where you left off the next day. It can be tempting to just leave everything as is but this can cause you to get delayed since you may need to look for specific items you left in a pile from the previous day.
Get help
If a specific task is too hard to do on your own, don’t be afraid to ask for help from family members or friends. It’s a great excuse to bond and it’ll be more fulfilling to have finished a project that you both worked on.
Focus on the project
No matter how easy or hard a project is, you want to make sure it is actually finished. It’s exciting when you have an idea and get started with it; the hard part comes in between where you’re not sure how long it will take to finish, or if it will ever get done at all. If it’s too big, divide the work into sections and work on one section before moving to the next part. Remember, this is a DIY project. You will encounter some mistakes and it’s never going to finish on time. What’s important is that you got it done.
